Memorial (1959-2008)

To the surprise of many, the Lincoln Wheat Cent was redesigned and in 1959, in conjunction with Lincoln's 150th birthday, the Lincoln Memorial Cent was released. In 1982, the cent underwent a content change due to the rising cost of copper. Except for a thin copper coating, the coin is now predominantly zinc. Production of the Memorial Cent continued until 2009.
