To prevent confusion akin to the Susan B. Anthony dollar, a new golden-colored dollar coin was proposed. Although there was a significant demand for dollar coins around the new millennium, the Sacagawea design did not gain widespread acceptance, and production for circulation purposes stopped after 2001. In subsequent years, the coin was minted mainly for collectors.
