The Peace Dollar was conceived to symbolize peace after World War I, yet its design wasn't approved before the 1921 resumption of silver dollar production. Consequently, a large number of Morgan Dollars were minted in 1921, prior to the commencement of Peace Dollar production later in the year. The coin's minting was part of the ongoing melting and recoining mandated by the Pittman Act, continuing until 1928 when the Act's stipulations were fulfilled. Nonetheless, more dollars were minted in 1934 and 1935 following a mandate for the Mint to acquire substantial amounts of silver. It is known that several hundred thousand Peace Dollars dated 1964 were minted, but they were subsequently destroyed and melted down.
