Expanding on the Sacagawea dollar's design, a new series of commemorative dollar coins debuted in 2009 to honor the contributions of Native Americans to the United States. The obverse design stayed the same as the Sacagawea coin, but each year saw a new reverse design. Additionally, mottos and mint marks were relocated to the edges of the coins. While coins minted between 2009 and 2011 were aimed at general circulation, later issues have been targeted mainly at collectors.
