Commonly referred to as "Chain and Wreath" cents, the Flowing Hair design of 1793 marked the United States' first foray into coin production. Although the series lasted less than a year, two distinctly different reverse designs were issued--a chain-link, and a wreath. A new Capped Liberty design was created later in 1793, which aligned with the new half cent design at the time.
