The Seated Liberty design, already featured on the half dime, dime, and quarter for several years, made its debut on the half dollar in 1839. This series had a lengthy production span, concluding in 1891. The half dollar underwent various minor design changes throughout its production, including a notable decrease in size in 1853 aimed at deterring silver speculators. This change was marked by the placement of arrows around the date to alert the public.
