Nickel (1865-1889)

Following the Civil War, a surge in silver prices led to the need for alternative base-metal coins, including the three-cent piece. In 1865, a copper-nickel version was introduced, which eventually phased out its silver counterpart by 1873. The growing popularity and demand for nickel five-cent pieces led to the nickel three-cent piece being discontinued in 1889.
