Civil War and Hard Times tokens were privately minted coins used for commerce and advertising purposes during times of financial difficulty or government-issued coin shortages. Hard Times tokens were predominantly issued from 1833 to 1843, whereas Civil War tokens were primarily issued from 1861 to 1864.
