Presidential (2007-2020)

Despite lackluster demand for Sacagawea and Native American dollars, the U.S. Mint initiated a new dollar coin program to honor American presidents, with production starting in 2007. These Presidential Dollars were minted alongside the Sacagawea and Native American dollars, and from 2007 to 2011, they were produced for circulation, leading to an excess of unused coins. Consequently, coins struck from 2012 onwards have been primarily for collectors. Coinage legislation mandates that a president must be deceased for at least two years before being commemorated on a coin, which resulted in the end of the program in 2016 after all eligible presidents had been honored. However, in 2020, after a new congressional act, the Presidential dollar program was briefly revived to mint a coin in memory of George H. W. Bush, who passed away in 2018.
