Buffalo (1913-1938)

Perhaps one of the most iconic coin designs in American history, the Buffalo Nickel was introduced in 1913 and replaced the Liberty Head design after its 30-year production run. Also known as the Bison or Indian Head Nickel, the buffalo design was supposedly modeled after Black Diamond, a buffalo housed at the Central Park Zoo in New York at the time. The design is notorious for its weak strikes and problematic raised date, which wore off prematurely and resulted in "dateless" nickels. Ultimately, the Buffalo Nickel was replaced by the Jefferson Nickel in 1938.
